Trimester: Year: 2006-2007 |
|||
Subject: Introduction to Spanish |
Teacher: Victoria Roberts |
|||
Class Description: Students started the trimester by posing the question “¿Por qué español?”—or “Why Spanish?” as they wrote a letter to me to think about their personal reasons for taking the time to study Spanish. Then they dove in and learned the ABC’s of Spanish pronunciation--by learning vowel sounds and tricky consonant sounds. Students then learned “survival expressions,” how to greet someone, and how to ask and answer common questions upon meeting new people. They also learned numbers, colors, emotion vocabulary, and how to converse about their feelings in more detail. Students memorized all the Spanish-speaking countries and the regions that make up Latin America (and a small part of Europe), and about the diverse people of Latin America. They ended the trimester by studying “El día de los muertos” and making an altar to celebrate the holiday. |

Class Description: Students started the trimester by reviewing material covered last year and setting year goals for Spanish. . Next, students learned the alphabet and advanced their phonetic skills by learnng common diphthong sounds. Much of the rest of the trimester was focused on learning and using new vocabulary through skits, hand-on activities, repetition, games, and small projects. Each unit was built on the previous. Therefore students were constantly building upon and reusing what they had learned. Vocabulary included dates, days of the week, months, seasons, time, their classes and schedule at Compass, and common expressions. We ended the trimester by celebrating “El día de los muertos.” |
