9/10th GRADE HUMANITIES

Trimester Two 2007-08

Time to read! During this unit on the 1940’s, you will get to choose from a variety of books related to our study.  You can look at the list of suggested books on the attached page.  We have only one copy—or two-- of most of these books, so we have to ask that you go to a book store or your local library (oh so handy) and secure a book from this list on your own, or find another one that takes place during or was written in the 1940’s.

You may certainly choose to read more than one of these books, but if you complete one and need a break from the 1940’s, you may choose a book that we will call your “free book.”    Keep in mind, you have a nice vacation coming up—a perfect time to read!

¤ Goals:

This is how it works:

Step 1: Set a realistic, yet challenging reading goal for the rest of the trimester.  We will set this together. Sign and turn in your contract.

Step 2: Find a book of your choice, and either take it out at the library, buy a copy, or fight for the 1 copy we have.  Get book approved by Julia or Amir.  BOOK CHOICE DUE: MONDAY, 12/17

Step 3: Read your book, with pencil and post its ready.  You will need to mark passages to respond to (see due dates on next page).  You will need to show the post its at your conference.  See separate handout: Reading Response Guidelines

Step 4: After completing each book that you read, sign up for a “prove to me you read” conference.  These must be must be completed by no later than Friday, Feb. 8  Don’t wait until the end!  Do the conference as soon as you’re done with a book.

I like to hear what you’ve read.  Bring book (marked with post-its) and your thoughts.  This is a pass or fail.  I will not expect you to have memorized every page, but I do expect you to have remembered characters, scenes of significance, etc.  I will also looking for comprehension of what you read.  You are responsible for signing up for a conference and remembering to come, WITH BOOK IN HAND!  No book=no conference.  Make your conference by coming to my desk asking for a good time.

Step 6:  Share your thoughts about your book with our class when there’s a “book chat.”

READING CONTRACT

TRIMESTER 2 2007

I commit to reading __________ Pages this trimester (by 2/8)

The book I have chosen to start with is:  __________________________________________________________

I understand that my goal is to read the above number of pages in at least one book from the 1940’s booklist, and then more books of my choosing.

I will stay in contact with Julia or Amir about changing my reading selection or goal.

I understand that I will have to prove my reading with an individual conference and write reading responses.  I will also share my thoughts about my book in class if asked.

Cut here and hand in your completed contract!

KEEP THIS IN YOUR PLANNER OR SOMEWHERE YOU’LL SEE IT!  YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR KNOWING THESE DUE DATES.  YOU MAY HAND IN RESPONSES EARLY, BUT NOT LATE, WITHOUT PENALTY.

Each time a response is due, hand in a passage and a ONE TYPED page response (aprox. 250 words) based on that passage.  Respond to whatever book you’re reading at the time that the response is due.  If you forget how to write these, see the guidelines for last trimester, but instead of a paragraph, now write a page.  The other change is that you only complete 4 total, and each one is a page in response to a passage (no reaction needed—that can be given at conference).

DUE DATES FOR READING RESPONSES:

For ONE response (not more), you may hand in a non written creative assignment as an alternative: a sketch, a collage, mobile, comic, or poem is a wonderful alternative, as long as it reflects your understanding and interpretation of the book you’re reading.

Response #1: WED.: 1/9

Response #2: WED.: 1/16

Response #3: WED.: 1/23

Response #4: FRI. 2/8
