Dear Families of 7th/8th Graders,

Phew! This time of year moves by so quickly! Spring trips were wonderful, enriching

experiences as I’m sure you have heard by now. I felt very lucky to spend 4 days in Baltimore with our stellar 8th grade class as they opened themselves to the experience of the city, new friends, and new ideas.

We are pulling into the final weeks of classes and are wrapping up the year, but that doesn’t mean the next few weeks will be a breeze! Students will be working hard completing their Humanities projects and preparing for their final Presentations of Learning and Roundtables. This requires a great deal of reflection, writing, and self direction. Class time will be devoted to this work on Friday and next Monday ad Tuesday (9 hours total), although students will be expected to do much of their PoL and Roundtable preparations at home.

  • 8th graders will begin to prepare for Roundtables this week. If you are a parent/guardian of an 8th grader, please contact Janice in the office to schedule a time for your child’s Roundtable. These will take place on the mornings of May 22, 23, 27, and 28. Thanks.

  •  7th grade PoL’s will take place on Wednesday, May 21, 2008 from 8:30-2:15. If you are a parent/guardian of a 7th grader, please contact Janice in the office to sign your child up for a time slot that works for you. Thanks!

  • The 8th grade graduation will take place at 6:30pm on May 29th. 7th graders and their families are strongly encouraged to attend in addition to 8th graders’ families and friends. It will be a night of celebration, memories, and yummy desserts. Please bring a dessert to share!

Dear Families of 7th/8th Graders,

  • In Humanities this week, we will be continuing Black Like Me and continuing our unit on adolescence. Students will be working in their groups on their project that involves making a short video segment and writing and illustrating a pamphlet article that explains some of the changes and challenges of adolescence from academic, social, and biological perspectives. This unit grew out of student interest, questions, and requests. Please talk to your child about what they are learning. It’s intense to be doing a study that is also very self-reflective! Students may also need support at home with following through on research and note-taking strategies that will be discussed and practiced in class. The deadline for the film portion of the adolescence project has been extended to Wednesday, May 14th, although the writing and illustration portions will be due this Friday, May 2.

  • 8th graders will also begin to prepare for Roundtables this week. If you are a parent/guardian of an 8th grader, please contact Janice in the office to schedule a time for your child’s Roundtable. These will take place on the mornings of May 23, 27, 28, and 29th. Thanks. The 8th grade graduation will take place on the evening of the 29th.

  • If you have not yet paid the $5 ticket price for the performance at Sandglass Theater a few weeks ago, please send it in to Janice as soon as possible. Thanks.

  • It was great to see those of you who were able to make it to mid-trimester conferences before the break. Progress reports were mailed out before or during the break. Please feel free to contact Andy or I with any follow up questions!

  • Spring Trips are next week! More information will go home this week. Permission slip and trip fees need to be turned in to the office. If your family is unable to afford the trip fee, please submit a request to the Student Activities Fund before Wednesday.

  • Have a beautiful week!

Dear Families of 7th/8th Graders,

  • In Humanities this week, we will be continuing Black Like Me and continuing our unit on adolescence. Students have chosen groups and are beginning a project that involves making a short video segment and writing and illustrating a pamphlet article that explains some of the changes and challenges of adolescence from academic, social, and biological perspectives. This unit grew out of student interest, questions, and requests and is an exciting example of student-led education at work. Please talk to your child about what they are learning. It’s intense to be doing a study that is also very self-reflective! Students may also need support at home with following through on research and note-taking strategies that will be discussed and practiced in class.

  •  I will be out of the classroom on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. On Wednesday, I will be attending a workshop on bullying and harassment at Antioch University New England with Eric and two Judiciary members. I hope that this workshop will help me to better support the middle school (and high school) students in their social learning. On Thursday and Friday, I will be attending a Wilderness First Response recertification course. I am sorry to miss this time in the classroom, but students will be working with Andy on emergency medicine and having time to work on their Humanities’ projects.

  • The highlight of this week will be a trip to see John O’Neal at Sandglass Theater. Taking advantage of another rich theater opportunity in the area, the Middle school will be traveling to Putney’s Sandglass Theater on Thursday, April 10th to see John O’Neal, a performer in residency there for the week as part of their Community Voices Project. O’Neal is a renowned civil rights activist, playwright, director and performer who has made a huge impact on African American theater and on bridging theater and civil rights. He will be doing a special performance at the theater for Compass and Hilltop’s middle schools. Students will leave school at noon and will eat lunch on the bus (some students have already ordered bag lunches). We will return to school by 3pm and students will participate in exploratories that day. Tickets for this performance are $5 and Janice will be collecting money for this trip in the office. Thanks for paying this as soon as possible.

  • Optional Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences will be offered on April 16 from 2:30-6, at least for the 8th graders. Please contact Janice in the office to schedule a conference.

  • Spring Trips are coming up! There will be an informational meeting about the Baltimore trip for 8th grade parents/guardians only on Monday, April 14 at 5pm. Your attendance is not required, but please come if you have any questions or concerns about the trip. A letter with more details about the Baltimore trip is being sent home today. Quotations to Choose From:

Please respond to one of the quotations below in a reading response. Please consider how this quotation relates to the racial conflict book that you read last trimester.

1. (p.41) “The minute you give [blacks] the rights to vote when [they] pay taxes, to have a decent job, a decent home, a decent education-then you are taking part in ‘race-mixing’ and that’s part of the great conspiracy to ruin civilization- to ruin America.” (spoken by John Howard Griffin to an elderly African-American man in a café in New Orleans as they discussed the situation of racism in America in 1959)

2. “I looked up to see the frowns of disapproval that can speak so plainly and so loudly without words. The Negro learns this silent language fluently. He knows by the white man’s look of disapproval and petulance that he is being told to get on his way, that he is ‘stepping out of line.’(John Howard Griffin’s thoughts after he has been “changed to a black man and he is “caught” standing outside of a fancy restaurant and reading the menu through the window.)
