7th and 8th Grade Writing Collection
Writing Collection (WC)
As part of our goal to improve academic quality at Compass, we have decided that writing is a good place to start this year. Even though your academic lives are already full of portfolios, gathering of work, assessments, binders, and so on, we will be instituting one more place for collecting work: THE WRITING ????! Here’s the basic explanation:
What and where is it?
It’s an organized binder used for collecting writing pieces throughout the year. It contains DRAFTS of writing (not just final essays) from a variety of classes (even math). See requirements for each grade on separate handout. It remains in your Humanities classroom.
When do I use it and who else sees it?
You will be given time in your Humanities class and advisory to place pieces in the binder. There aren’t a lot of pieces required, and writing for all of yoru classes will be represented. Each trimester, your Humanities teachers will read the pieces and decide whether you are making progress in writing. The binder will brought to your conferences after reports cards, and to your roundtables, so your parents and advisor can see your writing progress as well.
Does it get graded?
No, not exactly. There are requirements for types of writing demonstrated, and number of pieces, but not a final grade. The pieces are carefully read, and is then used to determine whether you need to work even more on your writing.
What are the consequences of a “weak” WP?
You win membership in the all new, all cool, WRITING CLUB. This will be led by Julia, Lauren, Amah??, and 1-3 peer tutors during exploratory once a week. It will be required in some cases, and a suggestion in other cases. Other consequences will be discussed in conferences.
TYPES OF WRITING REQUIRED FOR WP:
- Technical/scientific/procedure
- Persuasive/argument
- Fiction/Poetry
- Response to Literature
- Expository/Report
- Narrative/Autobiographical
See handout about specific numbers of these pieces.
