Backpacking:
  • On Thursday and Friday, September 13 and 14, the Middle School will go on an overnight backpacking trip together. This trip will be tied to our VT/New England natural and cultural history curriculum, and will be a time for students to get to know each other and a few of their teachers better, build a sense of community in the Middle School, and enjoy the outdoors together.  More information will be coming to you regarding this trip, but please put it on your calendars. It would be wonderful to have one or two parents join us, so please contact me if you are interested in helping to lead this trip!  Please make sure that health forms are in by the Aug. 20th deadline and that you return the permission slip below and trip fee by Sept  10th. Thanks!

Dear Parents of 8th Graders,

We are looking forward to the second part of the 2008 Xchange with ConneXions School in Baltimore, MD. Their week-long visit here in January was just the beginning of some profound relationships, conversations, and learnings. We are so lucky to have this connection with such an incredible school. It’s amazing how many things we have in common and yet our worlds are so different.

These are some of the things we are looking forward to doing in Baltimore:

-Staying with wonderful host families in the city

                            -Attending the Youth Media Festival

-Attending classes with ConneXions students (including dance and music classes)
-Continuing our conversations about race/racism in our society

-Learning about what’s it’s like to live in an urban environment

And much more…

Please sign the attached permission slip and return it to Lauren or Janice with the $100 trip fee. (Please remember that this trip is meant to be available to all 8th graders. If your family cannot pay the fee for the trip, students can request funds from the Student Activities Fund).

We will be having an optional informational meeting on Monday, April 14 at 5pm. Please come if you have any questions or concerns about this trip. In the meantime, please feel free to call or email Lauren (lauren@compass-school.org) with any questions.

Thank you all for your support of this powerful exchange experience.

All the best,

Lauren Beigel

  • Last year Compass began an exchange with Connexions Community Leadership Academy in Baltimore, MD.  Their visit to Compass and the 8th grade trip to Baltimore were very enriching experiences – we made new friends and got to experience and understand a different community and city culture. We are hoping that 8th grade families will be able to host students and teachers who will be coming to Compass for 4-5 days as part of the exchange in early November. Please email (lauren@compass-school.org ) or call (802-463-2525) if you are interested in being a host family. More details will follow. Thanks so much!
